Mark worked with Ion Torrent to develop a next-generation sequencing system as a fast, cost-effective, and scalable solution for clinical research and in vitro diagnostics.
The system used a semiconductor chip technology, which Mark invented in 2001 during his Ph.D. degree at the University of Glasgow.
Applications for the system include clinical oncology, cancer research, infectious disease and microbial research, and reproductive health research.
Ion Torrent represented a major advancement in healthcare technology, and was acquired by Life Technologies in 2010 for $725M.
